Overview

While the 2021 Volvo S60 is stylish and sophisticated, it shares many of the same desirable characteristics as other entry-level luxury sedans. However, it does not follow the standard formula. The BMW 3-series and the Genesis G70 are better suited for those who value driving pleasure over long-haul comfort. The Volvo, unlike its rear-drive-based competitors, uses a front drive platform which makes it less entertaining. The S60’s trio four-cylinder engines include a powerful turbo- and supercharged versions, as well as a more sporty plug-in hybrid setup. The interior of the Swedish sedan shines with its cossetting seats and inspired decor. The 2021 S60 is a great choice for all day pleasure and stylish design, aside from the quirky infotainment and uninspiring engine.

What’s new for 2021?

Volvo has made several improvements to the 2021 S60 lineup. All models come with fully LED headlights that can turn with the steering wheel, rear cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring and two USB-C ports in back seats. Keyless entry allows for trunk release, power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors. The Care Key allows owners to limit the vehicle’s top speed. Recharge is now the brand name for the T8 plug-in hybrid. The T8 plug-in hybrid has received other updates, including a free “City Weave” upholstery option, new Bowers & Wilkins speaker cones, and a gloss-black grille to match the R-Design.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

The 316-hp, all wheel-drive T6 powertrain would be our choice paired with the R-Design trim. The standard features include Harman/Kardon’s audio system, front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, front-seat adjustment and bolsters, unique exterior trim, and a power-operated trunklid. The Climate package, which includes heated steering wheel, heated rear seat, and heated windshield washers, is recommended for those who live in cold climates. The Advanced package offers more luxury than the standard package, including a 360-degree camera system and an additional 12-volt outlet in cargo. It also includes a head-up display, semiautonomous driving mode, and a wireless smartphone charger.

Transmission, Engine, and Performance

The S60 T5’s turbocharged four-cylinder produces 250 horsepower and powers the front wheels. The T6 version, which has standard all-wheel-drive and gains 66 horsepower thanks to its supercharger, has a T6 version. The all-wheel-drive Recharge T8 hybrid plug-in hybrid produces 400 horsepower, while the Recharge T8 Polestar plug-in hybrid is capable of producing even more power. The plug-in hybrid powertrain produces 415 horsepower and 494 pounds-feet of torque, and it comes with all-wheel drive. The exclusive Polestar edition of Care by Volvo is only available to subscribers who have subscribed to the Care by Volvo subscription. It includes adaptive dampers as well as 19-inch wheels. We were impressed by how the S60 trims performed during our first drive. The steering was very responsive and quick on twisty roads. There was also a lot of cornering grip. Both the T6 R-Design, a 316-hp T6 R/Design model, and the T8 Polestar, a powerful Recharge T8 Polestar, were quick and responsive.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

There are three different EPA ratings for the S60 that correspond to its powertrain configurations. Front-drive T5 models get 23 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. The T6 models, which are more powerful and have all-wheel drive, get 21 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway. Recharge T8 plug in hybrids are expected to get 69 MPGe, and have an all electric range of 22 miles. The front-drive T5 model and the all-wheel-drive T6 models were tested on our 75-mile highway fuel economy route. They earned 37 and 31 mpg respectively.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

Volvo’s S60 showcases its exceptional build quality. It features upscale materials and an unmatched attention to detail. It is forward-looking and features a wealth of flourishes, such as jewelled switchgear and extremely comfortable seats. The deluxe features include a 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster, ambient lighting, massage front seats, and more. The generous head and legroom of the back seat is a plus. The interior cubby space is highlighted with useful door pockets, a center console with a tray and a retractable cover, and a handy bin under the armrest. The S60’s trunk can hold five suitcases, one more than the 3-series.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The S60’s Sensus infotainment system is a tablet-style, but it can be difficult to use. Some of the touch-sensitive icons can be difficult to choose from, while others such as climate controls can be confusing to use. The system also has a large volume knob, and a handy home button. All models come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system is also available.
