Toyota’s 2021 Sienna minivan is a departure from frumpy. It features all-new styling and an all-hybrid lineup that makes it more efficient than its competitors. The updated Sienna features a sleeker body, wider grille and squinty lamps that draw inspiration from the 2020 Highlander. This gives the van an SUV-like appearance. The interior of the Sienna gets a similar bold makeover but keeps an eye on practicality, family-friendliness, and practicality. The V-6 engine from last year is gone. It has been replaced by a 2.5-liter four cylinder and two electric motors. This van is equipped with a standard hybrid powertrain. All-wheel drive is still available, and Toyota boasts best-in-class fuel efficiency.
What’s new for 2021?
For 2021, the Sienna will get a bold redesign as well as a new hybrid powertrain.
Pricing and Which One To Buy
The sporty XSE model is being considered. It features 20-inch wheels, aggressive front and rear bumpers, as well as sport front seats. In-dash navigation is standard on the XSE, as well as second-row captain’s seats. Like all Sienna trims the XSE comes standard with front-wheel driving. However, adding all-wheel drive is only $760. This seems like a worthwhile upgrade.
Engine, Transmission, & Performance
The 2021 Sienna, unlike previous Toyota family vans, is only available as a hybrid. The powertrain includes a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with four-cylinder capacity and two electric motors, which combine to produce 243 horsepower. An all-wheel drive option is also available. It adds an additional electric motor to the back that drives rear wheels. The main competitor to the Sienna, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, is only available with front-wheel drive. However, its V-6 engine and two electric motors produce 260 horsepower. Acceleration testing with the all-wheel-drive Sienna Platinum was disappointing. It took 7.7 seconds to reach 60 MPH and completed the quarter-mile in 15.8 seconds at 88 MPH. These results were similar to those of the Pacifica Hybrid, but far slower than the non-hybrid Pacificas we tested, as well as the Honda Odyssey.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
According to the EPA, front-wheel-drive versions of 2021 Sienna are expected to achieve 36 mpg in cities and 36 mpg on highways. All-wheel-drive models will be rated at 35 mpg. Our all-wheel drive Platinum test car achieved 29 mpg in both city and highway driving. We’ll update this story when we have a chance to run the new Sienna on our 75-mile highway fuel efficiency test.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo
The Sienna’s bold exterior redesign is complemented by a stylish and modern interior. Toyota has replaced the current open cockpit design with a tall central console. It spans the length of the dashboard from the armrest to the center console, and features a large storage compartment underneath. The Platinum and Limited models have two-tone interior trims and dashboards that are covered in a leather-like material. The XSE model has black-and-white faux leather seats with red contrast stitching. The Sienna’s second-row seats cannot be removed, unlike the Odyssey or the Pacifica Hybrid. However, the optional second row captain’s chairs can slide forward and back a total length of 25 inches to provide maximum legroom for rear-seat passengers. Platinum and Limited models are available with second-row reclining seats with pop-up ottomans. An onboard vacuum cleaner can be added to the two top trims.
Connectivity and Infotainment
Toyota’s latest infotainment interface, a 9.0-inch touchscreen LCD display that stands upright above the climate controls, is the new infotainment interface. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa connectivity options are all standard. There are seven USB ports throughout the van’s interior. Toyota offers SiriusXM satellite radio as well as an onboard Wi Fi hotspot. Base stereo has six speakers, while XLE models have eight. The XLE and XSE come with a 12-speaker JBL stereo system; the Limited and Platinum have it as standard. Starting with the XSE trim, in-dash navigation is standard. A rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display is available on all other models except the base LE model.
